THEATRE
The goal of ECS Theatre is to produce excellent shows from tech to design to performances with well-rounded actors and actresses who perform for an audience of One. Exploring theatre under a biblical umbrella grants us the opportunity to navigate the intricacies of what being a Christian in a liberal arts field looks like.
ECS’ Fall Student-Led Production: A True Behind-the-Scenes Learning Experience
The Theatre Department has a rich history of showcasing amazing

award-winning talent and productions on the ECS stage. ECS Performing Arts Director and two-time winner of the Orpheum’s Most Outstanding Director Ms. Lynden Jones decided it was time to enrich her students’ knowledge of the work that goes into on-stage performances by offering a hands-on learning experience to practice all aspects of theater including writing, casting, choreography, music, lighting, blocking and directing.
That is why this year’s fall show is a completely student-run production. Called Chapters of Emotion, this show is performing one night only TONIGHT – Thursday, October 2 at 7:00 p.m., on the stage of the Germantown Community Theater.
“We knew this year that we had certain kids that were interested in a lot of the behind-the-scenes and the process of creating the show,” Ms. Jones said. Specifically, several students want to pursue non-performing aspects of the theater in their future careers. For instance, senior Brokke Scott and junior AJ Loritts are interested in directing, and sophomore Cole Chauhan wants to explore stage lighting.
“So we wanted to take a step back to make sure we were giving our students that educational portion, not just the performance portion,” Mrs. Jones explained.

Les Misérables.
"As its mission statement says, all that we do
at ECS is biblically directed, and the Arts is
no exception. We are made in the image of God, the creator of the entire world. Each person has been instilled with a creative spirit and an eye for beauty. Throughout the Bible, God shows that He values artistic expression and that He expects His image-bearers to be creative as well."- Jacob Mohler, Class of 2020
THEATER CLASSES OFFERED
INTRODUCTION TO THEATER
This course explores the art of theater as a blend of storytelling, performance and design. Students will study theater’s history and its connection to other art forms, gain foundational skills in acting, and explore the fundamentals of technical theater, including set, lighting, sound, and costume design. Through reading, discussion and hands-on activities, students will learn the basics of dramatic structure and how all elements work together to bring a production to life. No prior experience required—just curiosity and creativity.
SPEECH
Students in the class study and practice the fundamentals of good communication. We then explore how to structure a strong, compelling and connected speech. Finally, students put the two together and present well formatted speeches focusing on both verbal and nonverbal communication and skills.
ACTING
Acting class focuses on the Uta Hagen acting technique. Students discover structured ways to approach acting and how to begin dissecting a script. We apply this technique and emotional discoveries through various scenes, monologues, and improv activities.
THEATRE PRODUCTION
This class introduces the “behind-the-scenes” elements of theatre. Students are introduced to all the various odd jobs of the theatre in practically every design category. We cover things such as light design, costume design, set design, stage management, and much more.
DANCE
Participants in Dance class explore all different styles of dance. Students learn basics in ballet, tap, and jazz as well as fun dance combinations and a few energizing dance projects.
MIDDLE SCHOOL DRAMA
Middle School Drama is an elective designed to build confidence, creativity, and collaboration in students. In Drama 7, students explore the foundational tools of acting: voice, body, imagination, and emotion through games, improvisation, scene work, and reflection.
In Drama 8, students build on these skills with an introduction to advanced performance techniques, script analysis, directing, and technical theatre. Across both courses, students develop as storytellers who use their God-given gifts to serve others, reflect Christlike values, and express meaningful truths on and off the stage.
LOWER SCHOOL DRAMA
Drama is incorporated into programs throughout the school year at ECS Lower School, especially at Christmas, Easter and other important celebrations.
Each year, third graders are given a choice to rehearse and perform Charlotte’s Web, The Wizard of Oz or The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Regardless of the selection, this production is always a highlight for all involved.
