Mrs. Jennifer Shorten

Jenny Shorten has 28 years of teaching experience with an emphasis on Social Studies (European History and Geography). Mrs. Shorten is ECS’ Academic Dean and Director of Enrichment and Electives, managing enrichment and elective opportunities K – 12. In addition, she teaches AP European History. She also has direct responsibility for the growth and development of ECS’ involvement in the YMCA Model United Nations and Youth in Government Programs. Outside of ECS, Mrs. Shorten is President of the TN Council for the Social Studies. Jenny is on the Board of the TN Geographic Alliance which exists “to assist in the creation of an informed citizenry by improving the stature of geography in the curriculum and empowering teachers and students at all levels with knowledge and performance capabilities that enhance lifelong learning.” She is the TN Delegate at the National Council for the Social Studies and serves as Chairman of the Workshop Committee. Mrs. Shorten has a passion for learning and teaching and strongly believes that a great teacher is one who never stops the quest of learning. She is also the recipient of the Steve Collum’s Distinguished Teacher for the 2017-2018 school year.
Mrs. Shorten and her husband John have been married 28 years. They are the parents of three children: Nicola (ECS 2012), Andrew (ECS 2015), and Cati who is an ECS senior. The Shortens attend Orchard Church.
