Since 2004, ECS has honored the top ten percent of each graduating class with an elegant banquet and tributes from faculty. The students, their parents, and faculty/staff members are invited to celebrate the academic achievements of these outstanding scholars. Each student requests one teacher with whom they have a close relationship to speak. Also as part of the program, the scholar chosen to receive the E. Brady Bartusch Scholarship/Leadership Award is announced.
On April 10, the Top Scholars of the ECS Class of 2017 were honored with dinner iat the Crescent Club. Upper School Principal Barrett Luketic opened the evening with prayer and Head of School Dr. Dan Peterson made introductory comments. Following the dinner, these faculty members offered tributes regarding the honored students: Ryan Dixon (Brice Boyer), Paul Vander Zwaag (Kalani Cannon), Brandon Tucker (Phillip Chu), Kim Arnwine (Matthew Churchill - Salutatorian), Andrew Smith (Andrew Crowell), Kim Maxwell (Tiffany Graves), Jenny Shorten (Jacob Hewitt), Alan Durham (Darby Hunsaker), Mark Brink (Atalie McGillivray), and Jordan Thompson (Sam Reddick - Valedictorian).
The E. Brady Bartusch Scholarship/Leadership Award honors the top scholar who best embodies the ECS mission. Dr. Peterson presented the award to this year's honoree, Atalie McGillivray has earned honors at ECS in the National Honor Society, on the Principal's List, and on Homecoming Spirit Court. She has served in Latin Club, Junior Class Committee, and in Servant Leadership Institute. Atalie was awarded the Founders' Scholarship at Union University which is a full, 8-semester scholarship. In his tribute to Atalie, Mr. Brink observed, "Addy, we are thankful to the Lord for your desire to see life through the lens of the Gospel. In this you join King David who said, 'Be exalted, O God, above the heavens! Let your glory be over all the earth!' [Psalm 108]. Because when we speak your name, Atalie, we proclaim, 'the Lord is exalted.'"
Each of this year's Top Scholars is a gifted and accomplished student. They represent a diverse range of achievements in scholarship, the arts, service, and athletics. The Top Scholars Banquet is designed to honor these deserving young men and women.
